Stephanie Allen-Adams earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Loyola University, Chicago, Illinois and a master’s degree in education from Bowling Green State University in Ohio. She is an Adjunct Lecturer in the School of Brain and Behavioral Sciences at The University of Texas at Dallas. She resides in Plano, Texas with her husband, Jim Adams; she is the author of A Magnificent Exchange.

Jesús J. Barquet

Mr. Barquet is currently a professor of Hispanic literature at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, New Mexico.  Some of his published books of poetry include: El Libro del desterrado (1994), Un no rompido sueño (1994), Naufragios (1988) Shipwrecks (2001), and Sin fecha de extinción (2004); His books of essay include: Consagración de La Habana (1991), Escrituras poéticas de una nación (1999), and Teatro y Revolución Cubana (2002). David Bedford

Argentina / Ft. Worth, TX Adult / Young Adult Fiction

Dr. David A. Bedford, a native of Ft. Worth, lived in Argentina from age three until entering college. He has been an instructor of Spanish at Texas Christian University since 1996.  The TCU Order of Omega awarded him the Outstanding Faculty Award for 2005-2006. Dr. Bedford is the author of Liliana y el espejo y otros cuentos (Ediciones Nuevo Espacio, 2002), a collection of thirteen fantastic short stories in Spanish and is currently working on a trilogy of novels in English (Angela, The Guardian of the Bay, and The Silver Path of the Moon) for young adults.

 

 

Raul Beryó

Peru / Dallas, TX Theatre

Mr. Beryón is a Peruvian actor, director, and teacher of theater. He has been a resident of Dallas since 2001 where he has taught creative classes for children, teens, and adults in Art Projects at the Dallas Public Library, the Church of Cristo, the Mexico Institute and MACA group.   He has directed and acted in various plays at the Latino Cultural Center of Dallas, including Quisiera Quererte Querido (May 2005) and Erase Una Vez un Rey (August 2005).  At the Dallas Bath House Cultural Center Los Humanoides (August 2006), and at SMU La Discreta Enamorada (December 2006) were presented.

 

 

Ashwinee Bhatt

India / Dallas, TX

Ashwinee Bhatt is the best-selling author in the present-day literary scene in Gujarati. He has worked as a free-lance writer for forty years and has authored novels, plays, television shows, films, short stories and articles for many Gujarati periodicals.  All of his novels were serialized in daily or weekly publications before they were published as books.  He has also translated forty books from English to Gujarati.  He has also worked as an actor and newscaster.  The Gujarati Sahitya Academy awarded Bhatt the Best Novel Award in 1993 and the Best Play Second Award in 2005.  His three latest novels, Khunnas, Sanju Malav, and Kadado will be published in 2007.

 

 

Patricia E. Blumenreich

Montevideo, Uruguay Adult Fiction

Ms. Blumenreich is a narrator, professor and psychiatrist. She graduated from the Faculty of Medicine of Uruguay in 1980 and immigrated to the United States in 1981. She has published articles in Postgraduate Medicine, Journal of the Kentucky Medical Association and Clinical Advances in the Treatment of Psychiatric Disorders. She is the principal editor and coauthor of the book Clinical management of the violent patient: A clinicians guide (Brunner Mazel, 1993). She also contributed to the book, Difficult Diagnosis II (WB Saunders, 1992). She has published two Spanish fiction books and contributes to Baquiana Literary Magazine.

Sonya J. Bowser was born in Santa Fe, NM and grew up in Little Rock, AR and Austin, TX. After graduating from high school she moved to Atlanta, GA to pursue a degree in mass communications at Morris Brown College. Later, she took her first job as a writer and editor for Blackgirl Magazine.  Five years later, Ms. Bowser came to Dallas to be closer to home. Dr. Habib Chamoun

Dr. Chamoun-Nicolas is a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin and the Monterrey Institute of Technology and has participated in several special executive programs, such as the Program on Negotiation at Harvard University and the Brazilian Seminar at the International School of Business at the University of South Carolina.  He is the author of Desarrollo de Negocios, Trato Hecho-Guía para una Negociación sin Fallas, and DEAL: Guidelines for a Flawless Negotiation (a special edition on culture and negotiation in English).

 

 

Bobby Chang

Bobby Chang is vice president for the corporate strategy and planning department of Huawei Technologies Corporation.  He previously spent more than 16 years with the Ericsson Company in Sweden and the USA, leading their global strategy and business intelligence group.  He is the recipient of numerous international recognitions including the 1989 Marcus Wallenburg Award.  He holds an MBA and other master’s degrees in computer science and technology, public policy, and international management studies.

 

 

Yangsook Choi

Korea/New York, NY Childrens Illustrator

Yangsook Choi grew up in Korea and moved to New York to study art. She was selected as one of the most prominent new children's book artists of 1997 by Publishers Weekly. She has written and illustrated numerous children's books including, The Name Jar, Behind the Mask, Earthquake, and New Cat. Her works have received numerous awards, including the International Reading Association's Children's Book Award, a California Young Reader Medal, and the Oppenheim Toy Portfolio Gold Award. Her latest title, Good-bye, 382 Shin Dang Dong, by Frances and Ginger Park, is about a young girls move from Seoul to Boston and debuts in September 2007.

Juan De Recacoechea

La Paz, Bolivia  Fiction-Mystery

Juan de Recacoechea was born in La Paz, Bolivia, and worked as a journalist in Europe for almost twenty years. After returning to his native country, he helped found Bolivia's first state-run television network, served as its general manager, and dedicated himself to fiction writing. Recacoechea is the author of seven novels.  American Visa is his first novel to be translated into English.

 

 

Cheryl Donovan

Cheryl Donovan has worked with women as a health-care provider and educator for over 20 years. She is a long-time resident of the Hiram Clarke area of Houston, Texas.  She is author of the book, Women What the Hell are You Thinking.     

 

 

Margaret Donnelly

Venezuela / Dallas, TX Nonfiction

After a childhood in Venezuela, the author moved to the United States and created a successful career as a lawyer. She received her Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of Texas at Austin and her undergraduate Bachelor of Arts degree from the prestigious Institute of Latin American Studies of the University of Texas at Austin. Today, she divides her time between her law practice, writing, civic and community projects. In recognition for her community work, she was nominated for the 2004 Prize of the Right Livelihood Foundation of Sweden, known as the "alternative Nobel Prize".

 

 

Larry Dowell

Alejandrina serves as General Manager for the Latino Cultural Center for the City of Dallas since September 29, 2004. Los lagartos de San Jacinto is another story for children. She has five family vignettes in the works to be published.

 

 

Shirley Duke

Shirley Smith Duke is a former reading, science, and ESL teacher.  She currently writes for children of all ages. No Bows! is her first picture book. She has written teacher guides for Peachtree nonfiction books, and a feature and profiles for the teen magazine Latingirl. Xavier Garza

Xavier Garza received his BFA at UT Edinburg in 1994. As an artist he has exhibited his work in the Institute of Texan Cultures in San Antonio, The Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center in San Antonio, the Ice House Cultural Center in Dallas , and other venues. As an author his stories and illustrations have been featured in such publications as the Milwaukee Spanish Journal, The Corpus Christi Caller Times and the Mesquite Review. He has published numerous short fictions and has authored and illustrated the books Creepy Creatures and other Cucuys (Arte Publico 2004), Lucha Libre: The Man in the Silver Mask (Cinco Puntos Press 2005), and Juan and the Chupacabras (Arte Publico Press 2006). The Legend of Charro Claus and the Tejas Kid is slated for release by Cinco Puntos Press late in 2007.

Mary Haverfield attended Philadelphia College of Art during her high school years for Saturday morning drawing classes and went on to study art at the University of Houston and at The Art Center in Pasadena, California. She has illustrated three childrens books before Harriett the Homeless Raccoon, including the first childrens book of the notable Texas author Jane Roberts Wood, her Mocha the Real Doctor [Bright Sky Press].   Others include The Adventures of Pinocchio and A Childs Book of Hope for Random House and The Dream Quilt for Waterbrook Press.  She has also done illustration work for textbooks, advertising, magazines and TV including The Barney Show. Charlotte Hogg

Charlotte Hogg is associate professor at Texas Christian University where she teaches writing courses at the undergraduate and graduate level.  She is the author of From the Garden Club: Rural Women Writing Culture (University of Nebraska Press). She has another book forthcoming in June 2007 from Southern Illinois University Press, Rural Literacies, co-authored with Kim Donehower and Eileen Schell. Jennifer Kindert

Freelance illustrator, portrait and muralist artist, and graphic designer Jennifer Kindert attended the International Art School in Stockholm, Sweden and later earned a bachelor of fine arts degree in illustration from New York Citys Fashion Institute of Technology. Monica Lavin

Mónica Lavín was born in Mexico City. She was awarded the Gilberto Owen Literary National Prize in 1996 for her short stories book Ruby Tuesday no ha muerto (Editorial Diana-Difocur, 1997), and she received the Colima Narrative Prize for best published work in 2001 for her novel Café cortado (Plaza&Janés, 2001) which will soon be published by the University of Wisconsin Press in the collection The Americas. She is also author of Uno no sabe (Plaza&Janés, 2003), La más faulera (Plaza&Janés, 1998), Leo luego escribo, and Ideas para disfrutar la lectura (Lectorum, 1998). Xiao-Bing Li

China/ Oklahoma Nonfiction: History

Xiaobing Li has been professor of history and director of the Western Pacific Institute at the University of Central Oklahoma (UCO) since 1993.  He received his Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon University and has taught at Phillips University, Enid, Oklahoma.  He is author and co-author of the books Voices from the Korean War (2004), Taiwan in the 21st Century (2003), Maos General Remember Korea (2001), Asian Crisis and New Paradigm (2000), Social Transition in China (1999), and China and the United States (1998).  His book, A History of the Modern Chinese Army, published by the University Press of Kentucky will be available in June 2007. 

 

 

Maricel Mayor Marsán

Shin Yu Pai

Shin Yu Pai is the author of The Love Hotel Poems (Press Lorentz, 2006), Unnecessary Roughness (xPress(ed), 2005), Equivalence, (La Alameda, 2003), and Ten Thousand Miles of Mountains and Rivers (Third Ear Books, 1998). Her most recent book, Sightings: Selected Works (2000-2005), was released in February from 1913 Press.  Her forthcoming books include Works on Paper (Convivio Bookworks), Nutritional Feed (Tupelo Press), and Haiku Not Bombs (Booklyn Artists Alliance). Shin Yus poetry has been commissioned on two different occasions by the Dallas Museum of Art. Her work has been featured on National Public Radios Studio 360 and Chicago Public Radios Eight-Forty-Eight. A graduate of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and alumnus of the Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics, she has exhibited her artwork at The Paterson Museum, The MAC, Harvard University, and The Three Arts Club of Chicago. She is programming director for WordSpace.

 

 

Patricio Palacios

Nació en Santiago de Chile. Periodista, fotógrafo, ilustrador, editor y director ejecutivo de la Revista Literaria Baquiana y de Ediciones Baquiana. Trabaja para la cadena de televisión hispana de los Estados Unidos Univisión desde 1992. Ha trabajado en otras cadenas de televisión y en otros medios de prensa previamente. Es un activo promotor de actividades culturales en la ciudad de Miami. Ha participado en la Feria Internacional del Libro de Miami, en la Feria Internacional del Libro del Palacio de Minería en Ciudad México, D.F., en los festivales de poesía Ardentísima (Murcia, España y San Juan, Puerto Rico) y Cosmopoética (Córdoba, España), así como en otras presentaciones culturales y conferencias en países de América Latina. Es co-editor del libro bilingüe de críticas literarias Perfiles y Sombras / Profiles and Shadows (2005). Sus fotografías y dibujos han ilustrado varios libros, entre los que cabe destacar: Impronta de los rincones - Antología Temática de Autores del Sur de la Florida (2002) y Las Letras – Homenaje a Carmen Conde en su centenario, publicado por el Patronato Carmen Conde y Antonio Oliver en Cartagena, España (2006). La Municipalidad de San Felipe (Chile) le otorgó un Galvano de Honor en reconocimiento a su valiosa labor editorial (2002).

 

 

Xiaolong Qiu

Xiaolong Qiu was born in Shanghai, China. He published prize-winning poetry, translation and criticism in Chinese in the eighties, and became a member of the Chinese Writers Association. In 1988, he came to the United States as a Ford Foundation Fellow, started writing in English, and earned Ph. D. in comparative literature at Washington University. He is the author of four novels, Death of a Red Heroine (2000), A Loyal Character Dancer (2002), When Red Is Black (2004), A Case of Two Cities (2006) in the critically acclaimed, award-winning Inspector Chen series; two poetry translations, Treasury of Chinese Love Poems (2003), 100 Poems from Tang and Song Dynasties (2007); and the poetry collection, Lines Around China (2003).

Hillol Ray

Hillol Ray, Poet Laureate, Author, and Song Writer, is an Environmental Engineer and Manager of Drinking Water Supply Enforcement Program, with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in Dallas, Texas. Born and raised in a suburb of Calcutta, India, he has been writing poetry since the age of six. Among his accomplishments and accolades in engineering and literary fields, to name a few, include: Winner of Bronze Medal in 2001, and “Excellence in Regional Customer Service” in 2002- both awarded by EPA in Dallas, Texas; 2006 NFIA (National Federation of Indian American Association) Award Winner from USA in Liberal and Fine Arts; Biography appeared in “500 Leaders of Science” and “International Directory of Distinguished Leadership” – both published by the American Biographical Institute in North Carolina; Inducted under “Nobel Laureates and Famous Indian Americans in USA”; Conferred “Diversity Poet” by the University of Michigan Medical School in Detroit, USA; Listed in “Who’s Who of Asian Americans”, and Marquis “Who’s Who in Science and Engineering”.
